Information for members about the Ministry of Education's $1,500 lump sum payment to primary and area school teachers

 

  • The $1,500 gross payment should be made to you on the pay day of 31 July 2019. Please note, the payment will be taxed. Review your payslip to check the gross figure.

  • Eligibility:
    To be eligible for the payment, a teacher needs to be employed in a role under the coverage of the agreement on 13 June, and also a member of NZEI on 13 June.

  • Part-time teachers in long term positions:
    Eligible teachers employed in a long term part-time position on 13 June 2019 (permanent part-time, or long term relieving) will have their payment paid based on their full-time teaching equivalent equivalent hours (FTTE) as of 13 June 2019.

  • Short-term relief teachers:
    The payment for eligible short term relieving teachers will be pro-rated based on the proportion of 140 working days you have worked between 24 October 2018 and 30 June 2019. NZEI Te Riu Roa believes that for teachers working as short term relievers on the 13th of June, the calculation of the proportion of 140 working days should include any long term relieving or permanent work that was undertaken between the relevant dates.

  • Teachers on leave:
    Parental leave - After discussions with the Ministry of Education, NZEI Te Riu Roa have received written confirmation that teachers who were on parental leave on 13 June 2019 remain eligible to the one-off gross payment (or the pro-rated amount for part-timers), so long as they return on or before 1 July 2020. To apply for the payment, the school will need to submit a Novo31 form to Novopay that has the words "Lump Sum" in the subject line.

    All other approved leave - If a teacher is otherwise eligible but was on other forms of approved leave on 13 June 2019, the teacher will be eligible to the one off gross payment of $1500 (or the prorated amount for part-timers) so long as the teacher returns to his/her position on or before 28 January 2020. To apply for the payment, the school will need to submit a Novo31 form to Novopay that has the words "Lump Sum" in the subject line.
 
What to do if you have any further questions:
  • If you believe you fulfill the eligibility criteria and do not receive the payment on 31 July 2019, please contact your payroll officer in the first instance.
  • If you are unsure about the prorated amount of the payment you have received, please also contact your pay clerk in the first instance, since your pay clerk will be able to find out details about your work history from Novopay.
