I'd like to become a member. What do i need to do?

All you need to do is complete the online form and select your payment option.

After I’ve sent the membership form, is there anything else I need to do?

No.  Once your application has been received and processed you should receive either an email or a letter from NZEI within 10 working days of our receiving the application.

If you are an existing member paying subscriptions by salary deduction NZEI will also contact your payroll and request the cancellation of deductions before activating your direct debit.
There’s a tool to determine the amount of the subscription by direct debit payment on the join page. You enter your hours of work, your hourly rate, and the sum of any allowances. The calculator spreads your income across a 52 week year, and determines the subscription payable per fortnight. Use that amount on the membership form on the join page.

How can I pay my membership subscriptions?

If you are a new or rejoining members there are three ways your subscription can be paid:
•    By direct debit from your bank account
•    By credit card
•    On invoice by cheque or direct credit

Can I pay by deduction from my salary or wages?

It is NZEI’s intention eventually to move all members from salary deductions, therefore no new salary deductions are being established for new or rejoining members.
If you are an existing member paying by salary/wage deduction you may, at this point, continue to pay that way although we do encourage you to consider switching to a direct payment method.

Can I pay by automatic payment from my bank account?

We prefer that members do not do this. NZEI still has a number of automatic payments being paid that date back to the early 1990’s that we are unable to stop. Unfortunately, these members have left their last known addresses and worksites. Because their automatic payments are being made at very old subscription rates their subscription payments are in arrears and their membership is no longer current.

How do I change the method of payment of my subscriptions?

If you are an existing member switching to pay by direct debit either use the online form or fill out a membership form with your direct debit details and note on the form that you are changing your payment method. The whole form does not need to completed.

Why use a direct payment method?

Using direct debit, credit cards or invoices reduces NZEI's dependency on payroll systems and the commission paid for the collection of subscriptions from members.
NZEI wants to make the most of the subscription income available. Rather than having to continue to pay 2.5% of your subscription to payrolls as a collection commission, direct debits incur only a small transaction charge upon NZEI.

Is there a setting up fee charged to establish the direct debit at my bank?

No. The establishment of direct debits is done electronically by Flo2Cash Ltd., the company NZEI has contracted to manage direct debit and credit card payments.

Can I continue to pay my subscriptions fortnightly when I pay by direct debit?

Yes. Just select the ‘Fortnightly’ option on the online form or tick the ‘per fortnight’ box on the membership form. Normally, fortnightly direct debits are scheduled for every second Wednesday evening but if you would prefer them to be made on a different day please let us know.

Can the amount of my direct debit be changed without my approval?

No. Subscription increases need to be approved by NZEI’s Annual Meeting held in September each year. If there’s a change to the subscription rate, then that change needs to be advised to you in writing no later than 10 days before the change is to take effect.

How much do I pay and how often?

The amount you pay depends upon how much you earn in any job covered by NZEI Te Riu Roa membership.

Recent changes to NZEI membership subcriptions

NZEI's Annual Meeting 2011 decided to change the NZEI Te Riu Roa membership subscriptions. Annual Meeting attendees voted in favour of an increase to subscriptions, to reflect the impact of inflation and GST increases since it was last adjusted in 2008. The new subscription rates were effective from 1 November 2011.

Please refer to the rate card on the  join page to ensure you are paying the correct subscription amount.

My earnings have changed. Can I change my subscription payment?

If you currently pay subscriptions by salary deduction your deductions should be calculated at the appropriate rate by your payroll.
If your direct debit or credit card payment needs amendment simply contact NZEI with the details of the change required.

I’m a Support Staff member of NZEI. My subscription payments vary according to the amount I’m paid each fortnight, and there are some pays when I don’t receive anything at all. How does direct debit of subscription payments work for me?

I’m a reliever, and I want to pay my subscription by direct debit. Some weeks I might work one day only. In other weeks I might work two or three days. How do I work out my subscription payment?

If you’re unsure, use your payslip closest to the end of March to find out your total earnings for the current financial year. If your circumstances are the same or similar, use that figure to determine the appropriate direct debit amount. Your continuing membership of NZEI is important.

Why do I pay subscriptions when I don’t get paid during the holidays?

Even though you might not receive any pay during the holidays you are still covered by NZEI.

Can I suspend my membership subscription payments?

Subscription payments can only be suspended if you take a period of leave without pay eg. Parental leave, from a job you are entitled to return to. In all other cases membership cannot be retained without payment of membership subscriptions.

What if I take a period of leave without pay?

Just let NZEI know when your leave is to commence and when it will cease. We will suspend direct debits for the period of leave. In cases of leave over nine months your bank may require us to obtain a new direct debit authority from you to recommence direct debits. Your membership will be retained during any period of leave without pay up to twelve months.

I pay my subscriptions by direct debit or credit card but have resigned from my job. What do I need to do?

You will also need to resign your full membership of NZEI. It is important that you do this as soon as possible to avoid overpayment of subscriptions. Members are required to provide 14 days notice of their resignation in writing. This may be done by email, fax or standard mail.
Former full members are eligible to become honorary members of NZEI and as such are eligible to continue membership of the Health Car + ( Previously known as Education Benevolent Society or EBS Healthcare) if applicable.
